The
coast of New South Whales, Australia, became a surfing
Mecca during the Tumultuous era of the 1960's as bands
of carefree beats rejected the bustling cities and
their industrial complexes in favor of a communal paradise
bounded in nature. In spring of 2001, in response to
30-years of the surfing industrialization and exploitation,
a handful on the world's most influential wave riders
commandeered one of the last remaining farmhouses left
in gorgeous hills outside Balina, NWS, fleeing, if
only for a while, the trapping's of their own lives.
They turned the old farmhouse into a de-facto retreat
for spiritual renewal. Shelter is a tribute to the
by gone era of surfing innocence and the films that
came out of it. It shows what happens when the best
and brightest of today try living a surfing life in
its purest form. No cell phones, no contests no laptops,
not even TV. The long list of travelers stopping by
included surfers of every ilk, musicians, shapers,
writers, painters, all seeking a renewal of their faith.
In the end they found despite all the changes and problems
of this modern world, one thing remains the same: surfing
is still their greatest shelter. Starring Rob Machado,
Shaine Dorian, Ben Harper, Joel Tudor, Dean Morrison,
Donovan Frankenreiter, Kelly Slater, Talor Knox, Jon
Swift, Jack Johnson and more.
